What are cookie?

Cookies are small text files sent from the site to the terminal of the interested party (usually to the browser), where they are stored to be then retransmitted to the site at the next visit of the same user. A cookie cannot retrieve any other data from the user’s hard drive or transmit computer viruses or capture email addresses. Each cookie is unique to the user’s web browser. Some of the functions of cookies may be delegated to other technologies. In this document, the term ‘cookie’ refers to both cookies, properly so-called, and all similar technologies.

Type of cookies

Cookies may be first-party or third-party, where by “first-party” we mean cookies that refer to the site as a domain, while by “third-party” we mean cookies that are related to external domains.

Third-party cookies are necessarily installed by an external subject, always defined as “third party”, not managed by the site. These subjects may also install first-party cookies, saving their own cookies on the domain of the site.

Another type of cookie are the so-called “Flash Cookies” (Local Shared Objects), used within Adobe Flash Player to deliver some content, such as video clips or animations, so as to remember your settings and preferences. Flash cookies are stored on the device, but are managed through a different interface than that provided by the browser used.

Nature of cookies

They are not used for other purposes and are normally installed directly by the owner or manager of the website. They can be divided into:

  • navigation or session cookies, which ensure normal navigation and use of the website; they are in fact necessary for the proper functioning of the site;
  • analytics cookies, similar to technical cookies when used directly by the site operator to collect information, in aggregate form, on the number of users and how they visit the site, in order to improve the performance of the site;
  • functionality cookies, which allow the user to browse according to a set of selected criteria in order to improve the service rendered to the same. The prior consent of users is not required for the installation of these cookies.

Profiling cookies

Profiling cookies are aimed at creating profiles related to the user and are used in order to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the same in the context of surfing the net.

The consent of the interested party is required for the use of profiling cookies. The user can authorize or deny consent to the installation of cookies through the options provided in the “Cookie Management” section.

In case of third-party cookies, the site does not have direct control of individual cookies and can not control them (can neither install them directly nor delete them).
